The Fundamentals of Effective Leadership

The Fundamentals of Effective Leadership is an educational program for new and mid-level managers, presenting principles and practices that are essential to effective leadership and management. In partnership with Caravela, Inc., The Hill Center for Ethical Business Leadership offers a three month leadership development program that includes:

  • A curriculum taught by experienced leaders with decades of management experience.
  • Peer interaction and support from managers of other, non-competing, organizations.
  • One-on-one coaching to address development needs of individual participants.
  • Integration of a Leadership Project to bring immediate and tangible value to the participant's organization.

The program is taught in a peer group setting with sufficient preparation and support to encourage immediate use of practices and principles. Topics include:

  • Vision Creation and Strategic Planning
  • Team Building and Group Dynamics
  • Delegation and Work Direction
  • Performance Management and Talent Development
  • Communication and Feedback
  • Problem Solving and Decision Making
  • Negotiation and Conflict Management

Courses combine presentations, discussions, and hands-on activities in a lively environment that encourages participants to engage and enjoy the process of learning and growth.

Instructors:

Chad Weinstein is director of the Hill Center for Ethical Business Leadership, an organization dedicated to helping businesses prosper through a strategic commitment to ethics and social responsibility. Weinstein's experience includes 20 years as a consultant and manager, serving a wide range of industries. He holds a Ph.D. and an M.A. in business ethics.

Tom Laughlin is the principal consultant and president of Caravela Inc, an international leadership and business development consulting firm based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Laughlin's experience spans three decades, including senior leadership roles in both Fortune 100 and small start-up companies. He holds an MBA and has completed post-graduate training related to his executive coaching practice.

Hill Leadership Working Group

Groups meet once each month, typically to discuss a text and apply lessons to our leadership work. Membership is open, and regular participants may be listed on a roster to facilitate discussion by group members between sessions.

  • Monthly meetings typically center on a text, but participants need not have read the texts to benefit from the conversations. We introduce a new text most months; previous topics included:

    • Machiavelli, The Prince
    • Bill George, True North
    • A. Leon Higgenbotham, Open Letter to Clarence Thomas and selected readings

    • Contact Charles Weinstein for information on current texts or to recommend texts to the group
  • Problem-Solving Sessions on Demand. Members may convene a meeting at the Hill Library, at their workplace, or by teleconference to discuss problems in a confidential environment with other members.
  • On-line discussion site available 24-7 through LinkedIn.
